JOJO has shared our life since we adopted him at six months old. He followed us from a city flat to the countryside, and is one of those familiar presences that make a place feel like home. Painting him is also my way of saying how much he means to us.

JOJO, my little treasure, is a black-and-white cat. He was seven and a half when I wrote this story.
Friends who paint often told me how difficult it can be to paint someone, or an animal, you know deeply. It isn’t just about technique or getting the likeness right. It’s hard to capture all the love you feel. Still, I wanted to try.
When we adopted him, he was only six months old, with wide, curious eyes. His foster family warned us that he was wary of people and might need a few days to settle in. Yet as soon as he arrived, he came and curled up against me.
We often think we choose our pets, but I sometimes feel they choose us.
JOJO has been with us through an important part of our life in France, following us through three homes, from a city flat to the countryside.
Now he’s a proper country cat. He plays with his younger golden retriever brother, naps in the sun on the sofa, chases insects in the garden and visits the neighbourhood cats.
We all show love in different ways. Painting is one of mine. I hope he has many more happy, healthy years ahead.
